Three Capes Private Group

Have you ever imagined walking through Tasmania’s wild heart, tracing the edge of the Bay of Fires, or standing atop a cliff on the Great Ocean Walk? If so, you’re not alone. Many people dream of a multi-day walking tour in Australia, but hesitate due to concerns about fitness, gear, or group dynamics, and so forth.

At Park Trek Walking Holidays, we’ve guided thousands of walkers across Australia’s most iconic landscapes. And we’ve answered every question you can imagine—often more than once! So, if you’re wondering whether a guided hiking holiday is right for you, we’re here to say: you’re more ready than you think!

Common Questions & Concerns About Guided Walks

If you’ve never done a guided walk in Australia before, it’s natural to have questions like:

– “How fit do I need to be?”
– “What gear do I need—and what do you supply?”
– “How do I choose the right walk for me?”
– “What about boots and clothing?”
– “How should I train or prepare?”

These are all great questions—and we’ve created a mountain of resources to help answer them confidently. Start with our guide: Why You Are Ready For Your First Walking Tour, which offers practical advice and reassurance for first-time walkers. Or our more detailed Get Hiking Ready Guide.

Our Walking Holidays Are Designed for You

You don’t need to be a seasoned hiker or gym junkie to enjoy a Park Trek tour. If you can walk comfortably for a few hours at a moderate pace, you’re likely well-suited to our trips.

We focus on immersive nature experiences, not endurance tests. Our itineraries include plenty of breaks, scenic stops, and time to soak in the beauty around you. It’s about time and space, not speed!

How To Prepare for an Australian Multi-Day Hike

Preparation is the key to confidence in everything we do in life. That’s why we offer detailed pre-tour notes, gear advice, and a comprehensive Get Hiking Ready guide. It includes suggested training programs, footwear advice, tips on hiking poles, and strength exercises.

We also recommend starting your training 6–8 weeks before your tour. Begin with short walks and gradually increase your distance and terrain difficulty. Incorporate stairs, hills, and uneven surfaces to simulate trail conditions. We’re sure your friends or dog might want to join you to make preparation part of the fun!

Choosing the Right Walk for You

Not all walks are created equal—and that’s a good thing. Whether you’re looking for a gentle coastal stroll or a more rugged alpine adventure, we’ll help you find the walk that suits your comfort level and interests.

One of our easier and no less beautiful first walks is the Daylesford-Goldfields Walk in Central Victoria. Or if you want something challenging try out Three Peaks Vic Alps Challenge Walk. The thing is, you decide.

For footwear, we recommend visiting a trusted retailer to get properly fitted hiking shoes or boots. Good socks and worn-in shoes can make all the difference in your comfort. See our useful guide here.

Training Tips for First Time Walkers

You don’t need a gym membership to get trail-ready. Our guide includes simple training programs for both urban and rural walkers. Tips include starting with short walks, adding stairs and hills, wearing your hiking shoes during training, and including strength exercises.

Try to walk 3–4 times per week, and include one longer walk on the weekend. Mix in some strength training like lunges, squats, and planks to build endurance and stability. And as we said before, ask your friends to join you so you can catch up and connect while enjoying your walking preparation together.

Best Times to Walk in Australia

Spring and autumn are ideal for most walks, offering mild temperatures and vibrant landscapes e.g. Kangaroo Island or our unique Flinders Walk With Camels. While summer is the perfect time for our coastal walks like the Bay of Fires and the Alpine regions, like the Snowies or Vic Alps.

While winter suits some of our more arid regions like Kakadu-Litchfield-Arnhem, Ikara / Flinders Ranges, the Light to Light for those who enjoy crisp air and solitude. Each season offers something unique – wildflowers in spring, golden foliage in autumn, and fewer crowds in winter. Our team can help you choose the best time based on your preferences.
