The Tarkine is one of the largest tracts of cool-temperate rainforest in the world. Set in remote north-west Tasmania, this region is well known for its towering trees, lush understory, beautiful waterfalls and mighty rivers. Our five-day Tarkine Wilderness walking tour takes you to the highlights of this very special region.
We’ll walk among towering stringybark trees, take a close-up look at delicate mosses and keep our eyes open for Tasmanian Devils. We’ll walk to Tasmania’s highest single drop waterfall, Montezuma Falls. We’ll hike the steep trail to the summit of Mt Farrell for broad views across the Tarkine, Lake Tullah and Cradle Mountain. An historic boat will take us on a trip down the Pieman River – it’s a spectacular journey and a real trip highlight.
There is plenty to get excited about for wildlife enthusiasts. The Tarkine is home to significant populations of wildlife and birdlife including several endangered species. We’ll look out for the endangered Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle and the orange-bellied parrot, as well as wombats, wallabies and spotted-tailed quolls. By the waterways we might find burrowing yabbies, the giant freshwater lobster, Tasmanian tree frogs, walking worms… an array of interesting creatures make their home here.
For three nights, our accommodation in the Tarkine is in the heart of the rainforest region – we stay in eco wilderness cottages that are truly remote – there’s no TV, no wifi and no mobile coverage. It’s a perfect escape from your everyday routine. After a day’s walking on the trails you can simply relax, have a chat and soak up the beauty of the natural environment.
