Discover one of Australia’s most Underrated Coastal Walks

While Australia’s great coastal walks often draw attention to Tasmania or the Great Ocean Road, those who have discovered the Sapphire Coast know it remains one of the country’s best-kept secrets.

Located on the far south coast of New South Wales, the Light to Light Walk traces a stunning stretch of coastline between historic Boyd’s Tower and Green Cape Lighthouse. Along the way you’ll encounter towering headlands, secluded beaches, windswept heathlands, rugged rock platforms and forests filled with birdlife.

What makes this walk particularly special is its diversity. No two days feel the same. One moment you’re wandering across pristine beaches, the next you’re standing atop dramatic cliffs watching waves explode against ancient rock formations. The scenery constantly changes, ensuring every day delivers new highlights and fresh perspectives.

For walkers seeking a multi-day coastal adventure without the crowds found on some of Australia’s more famous trails, the Light to Light Walk offers a truly rewarding experience.

Walk through remarkable natural beauty

The Sapphire Coast earns its name for good reason.

Throughout the journey you’ll be treated to ever-changing shades of blue, from sheltered turquoise bays to the deep sapphire waters of the Pacific Ocean. The coastline here is wild, raw and beautifully unspoilt.

One of the standout features of the walk is the extraordinary variety of landscapes packed into a relatively short distance. Red-rock headlands, ocean platforms, coastal heath, sheltered inlets and expansive beaches all feature prominently throughout the experience.

Highlights include the striking red rocks of Leather Jacket Bay, the tranquil beauty of Mowarry Beach, the dramatic cliffs surrounding Green Cape and the spectacular coastal views between Haycock Point and Barmouth Beach.

It’s the sort of scenery that constantly encourages you to stop, take a breath, and simply appreciate where you are

Keep an eye out for whales, wildlife and birdlife

One of the great joys of walking the Sapphire Coast is that nature never feels far away.

From late autumn through spring, humpback whales are frequent visitors to these waters, and sighting them from the trail is a genuine possibility. Depending on the season, you may witness breaching whales, playful calves or pods migrating along Australia’s east coast. The region also has a unique history of orca sightings, with Eden being famous worldwide for its fascinating relationship between killer whales and the early whaling industry.

Birdwatchers will find plenty to enjoy, with opportunities to spot a wide range of coastal and woodland species. The national park is habitat for rare and endangered birds, including ground parrots and striated field wrens. Wildlife sightings can also include kangaroos, echidnas and goannas.

Whether you’re a dedicated naturalist or simply enjoy being immersed in nature, the abundance of wildlife adds another dimension to the walking experience.

Connect with Thousands of Years of Aboriginal Culture

One of the most meaningful aspects of this tour is the opportunity to engage with the rich Aboriginal heritage of the region.

On the first day you’ll walk sections of the Bundian Way Story Trail, an ancient pathway that connected the coast at Twofold Bay with the high country and Mount Kosciuszko. Aboriginal people from multiple Nations travelled this route for thousands of years, gathering for cultural ceremonies, trade and seasonal events.

As you follow the trail, story installations and interpretive experiences help bring this remarkable history to life, creating a deeper appreciation of the landscape and its enduring cultural significance.

At Park Trek we believe walking becomes even more rewarding when we understand the stories embedded within the places we visit.

Stay in Comfort Beside Twofold Bay or at Green Cape Light station

After a rewarding day on the trail, comfort matters.

Throughout the tour you’ll stay at the beautifully situated Seahorse Inn (or Green Cape Light station), positioned on the shores of picturesque Twofold Bay. The accommodation is a relaxing and comfortable base from which to explore the region.

Guests stay in well-appointed villa-style accommodation featuring shared bathroom facilities, comfortable living spaces, kitchen facilities, air conditioning and outdoor decks that provide the perfect place to unwind after a day’s walking. Rather than packing up and moving each day, you’ll enjoy returning to the same comfortable base each evening, allowing you to relax and fully settle into the rhythm of the tour.

Carry Only a Day Pack

One of the biggest advantages of joining a guided walking holiday is the simplicity it brings. Making the whole experience accessible and enjoyable for virtually anyone who likes a walk.

Unlike traditional backpacking treks, you’ll only need to carry a comfortable day pack containing your personal essentials, water, snacks and lunch. Your main luggage remains at your accommodation while Park Trek manages transfers and logistics throughout the tour.

This allows you to focus on enjoying the walk itself rather than worrying about carrying heavy packs over multiple days. For many guests, it’s the perfect balance between adventure and comfort.
