About the Bay of Fires
It is no understatement to say that the Bay of Fires Conservation Area holds some of Australia’s most beautiful coastline. On Tasmania’s north-east coast, this area features clear turquoise water, curving white sand beaches and huge smooth granite rock formations. It is isolated, rugged and beautiful – a perfect region to explore on foot.
The area is easily recognisable for its striking orange rocks – the orange colour comes from a lichen thats grows on the granite. The coast here was not named for the lichen but rather for the beach fires of the local indigenous people, spotted by a Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773. However, the name is strikingly appropriate, as the intense orange of the lichen seems to glow like a fire in the light of the evening sun.
Our four-day Bay of Fires and Mt William trip will have you walking along the white sand beaches, exploring isolated lagoons, rock hopping around exposed headlands, and traversing behind the beach through coastal bush.
You can also ascend Mt William – a small climb that offers incredible views along the coast and even out to the Bass Straight islands on a clear day. You’ll explore the enclosed inlet of Ansons Bay, looking out for the birdlife, and walk to Eddystone Point lighthouse, perched on the end of one of Tasmania’s most easterly headlands.
On this fully-guided trip you’ll walk each day carrying only your day pack, and head back to comfortable accommodation each evening for a two-course dinner. It’s the perfect way to experience spectacular wilderness hiking in complete comfort.
