After a couple of hours travelling, we have our morning tea stop at a local cafe in Cooma. After a brief visit to the Information Centre, we then continue onto Thredbo. We check into our Lodge style accommodation, have lunch and then get organised for the first walk of the tour. Today’s walk follows alongside the cascading, icy waters of the Thredbo River from Dead Horse Gap back into Thredbo village.
On this signposted river track walk, you will see gums growing around granite boulders and watch the river race beneath your feet as you cross the footbridges. Stroll through the snow gum woodlands and enjoy the views down to the river. Keep your eyes on the river for trout and platypus – look for circular ripple patterns.
Upon return to the Lodge, you settle in for pre-dinner nibbles, followed by a delicious two-course dinner prepared by your Park Trek guides.
After breakfast and lunch making, we head out for our walk to Charlotte’s Pass. Today’s walk sees us walking along a well-formed track up to Carruthers Peak enjoying superb views of Lake Albina and Blue Lake.
After rock-hopping across the Snowy River below Charlotte Pass, we have a challenging climb up to the top of the Main Range through alpine herb fields past Hedley Tarn Lookout to Blue Lake Lookout.
Blue Lake is arguably the jewel in the crown of the Kosciusko National Park. It then climbs Carruthers Peak which provides spectacular views over the western slopes of the Main Range.
It continues along the exposed ridge of the Main Range above Club Lake and Lake Albina until it meets the Summit Walk between Rawson Pass and Mt Kosciuszko.
It is a challenging day of walking, and we return to our accommodation late afternoon for well-deserved nibbles followed by a lovely two course dinner prepared by your guides.
After the usual breakfast and lunch making our day starts with a bit of a difference. We’ll make our way to the highest point in the country, Mt. Kosciuszko. We take a chairlift ride to the top the Thredbo ski fields, then walk to the top of Mt. Kosciuszko and return via Dead Horse Gap.
Enjoy the chair lift from Thredbo Village to Main Range. Pass snowdrifts that survive year-round and soak up the awesome splendour of our surrounds on top of Mt. Kosciuszko.
Our return journey follows a beautifully shaded trail that affords us superb views over the southern end of Australia’s High Country.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner at local restaurant Accommodation: Pender Lea Chalets
After breakfast, we pack up our belongings for the last time and your guides will pack the trailer in preparation for our last day.
This morning we take a walk through the start of the alpine zone and up into the snow gums and rock boulders of Porcupine Rocks. Wallabies and kangaroos are common along the track, and other flora and fauna will delight. This is a beautiful walk with a distinct and delightful landscape. From the top of our ascent, you will enjoy spectacular views to the Thredbo River Valley and Bullocks Flat below, and back to Perisher and the Main Range.

We depart Melbourne and head north. Our first day’s drive takes us via stunning Victorian country landscape as we pass through Seymour, and Glenrowan—the home of Ned Kelly’s famous last stand and police shoot out in 1880.
As we enter Porepunkah we make our way up into the ‘island in the sky’ – Mt Buffalo National Park where we enjoy lunch at Lake Catani before we start our first hike of the tour as we take on Mt Dunn.
Mt Dunn is set amongst sub alpine plains, and tall alpine ash forest, sure to inspire you in this lush landscape. The summit offers sublime views of the Mt Buffalo plateau and will take us approx. 2hrs to complete this trek.
After our first spectacular walk and a busy day of travels we’ll head to the nearby township of Bright to our lovely overnight accommodation set amongst the trees on the Ovens River, enjoy some time to wind down before a delicious two course meal prepared by your guides.
An early start for a big day! We make lunch, pack our gear, leave our accommodation and take a scenic drive through Tawonga Gap to Mountain Creek carpark. Our ascent is via the Staircase Spur track, climbing through the peppermints, then mountain gums, snow gums and finally breaking out above the tree line.
From there we achieve the summit cairn and stand upon Victoria’s highest peak at 1986 metres above sea level. A great place to have lunch, then it’s down via the Eskdale Spur to our bus waiting at the bottom.
We head back to your accommodation to relax and refresh before heading out into town for dinner at a local eatery or pub.
Depending on the weather, group dynamic and road access, todays walk could be completed in either direction. Guides will choose the most suitable on the day.
We start today with a satisfying breakfast, and we make and pack our lunch and snacks for the trail. Then we’re off for a busy day taking on Mt Feathertop Summit via the township of Harrietville—an old goldmining township- heading deeper into Victoria’s high country at the head of the Ovens Valley.
Our trailhead is at the south end of the breathtaking Razorback, a ridgeline connecting two of Victoria’s highest peaks – Mt Feathertop and Mt Hotham. It is a rocky and very exposed trail in parts and caution is required, particularly in windy conditions. The climb to the summit of Mt Feathertop (1922m) shows off incredible views.
As we descend down the mountain into Harrietville you’ll pass through camping areas dispersed amongst the snow gums and into the forest, before finishing the trail with a huge sense of achievement.
Walking straight into the Harrietville Hotel Motel after a long and rewarding day, it is a perfect time to gather round to share stories and reflect on the day’s adventure. After a well earnt dinner, we make our way back to Bright to turn in for the night.

Escape to Bruny Island – Lunawanna-allonah on an All-inclusive Guided Walking Holiday
“Thoroughly enjoyed this experience. My first ever walk and it exceeded expectations. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable and prepared. Food was great and dietaries well covered. Accommodation comfortable and cosy. Walks wonderful … and our guides were always on the lookout for wildlife and flora. I’ll definitely walk again with Park Trek!”– Bronwyn, March 2024
Discover the wild charm of Bruny Island, known as Lunawanna-allonah to its Traditional Custodians, on a 4-day guided walking holiday just an hour south of Hobart. This soul-refreshing short break offers a peaceful escape into one of Tasmania’s most captivating natural havens.
Traverse towering sea cliffs, ancient rainforests, and windswept beaches with pounding surf. Our 35km all-inclusive walk is designed for all fitness levels and led by expert guides who share insights into the island’s ecology and culture. Spot rare birds like the forty-spotted pardalote and swift parrot, and explore iconic locations including Fluted Cape, Cloudy Bay, and hidden gems off the beaten track.
Evenings are spent enjoying homestyle hospitality, local produce, and fireside conversations in unique accommodation nestled in native bushland. With just a daypack to carry, you’re free to immerse yourself in the rejuvenating rhythm of nature.
Perfect for likeminded travellers, this adventure blends wellness, discovery, and connection. Join us and experience the quiet magic of Bruny Island – Lunawanna-allonah, where every step brings you closer to the heart of Australia’s island wilderness. Read more details of this beautiful walk on our blog.
We depart the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Hobart at 7:45am, to catch the morning ferry from Kettering across to North Bruny. We have the opportunity to stop at some local producers on our way to the neck to pick up some local honey, cheese and beer if you desire.
We then drive south along the isthmus that connects the northern and southern segments of the island, and take part in a short walk to the Neck Lookout via a wooden set of stairs. This vantage point provides us with a brilliant outlook to many parts of the island that we will be exploring over the coming days. Your guides will point out Mt Mangana, Cape Queen Elizabeth and the long stretch of beach below.
Further south on the island, we explore the historic Cape Bruny Lighthouse, and the tops of the surrounding escarpment which falls away to the ocean. Courts Island can be seen nearby to the south-west, tailed shearwaters and a causeway at low tide.
We finish our day with a relaxing 1.5 hour circuit on the Labillardiere Peninsula – passing through open heath country with coastal views, and a couple of picturesque secluded beaches. This walk is particularly notable for its usual prevalence of native birdlife.
After our days exploring, we make our way to our accommodation at The Bruny Island Lodge where you can settle in and unwind in this unique and funky rustic lodge while enjoying a delicious nibbles platter made by your guides.
Today we head out into the rugged southern portion of the island – exploring the white sands of Cloudy Bay and the elevated view point of East Cloudy Head.
We start our walk along a windswept beach for a few kilometers before taking an inland track upwards through native heathland, teeming with birdlife and colourful seasonal flora. Our ascent brings us to the very top of the hill – providing expansive views to the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, the Southern Ranges (on mainland Tasmania), and across the wild and often temperamental reaches of the Southern Ocean. There is nothing standing in the way between us and Antarctica – and on some days you can definitely feel it!
We return to the bus via the same route before heading back to our accommodation. In the afternoon there is an optional stopover in Lunawanna and the Bruny Island Winery, or you can choose to kick back and enjoy the peace and quiet of the lodge.
After breakfast and lunch making – we depart for the small township of Adventure Bay from where we will start today’s main walk – the Fluted Cape Circuit.
Tackling this walk in an anti-clockwise direction allows us to ease into the rhythm of walking with a nice gradual climb to the highest point on the cape.
Open views continue as we descend through eucalyptus and she-oak forest to Grass Point and Penguin Island, where we can potter about the rocky shoreline. This locality was once the site of an early whaling station – and thankfully recovering populations of whale are starting to make their way back to the area during migration periods. On the final flat trek back to the bay, keep your eyes peeled for a family of White Bennett’s Wallabies that reside in the area.
In the afternoon we walk through a pocket of enchanting wet rainforest following the flow of a small creek. Towering eucalyptus, blackwoods and tree ferns dominate and seem almost out of place – but in fact there are still vast stands of such forest along the eastern half of the island.
Optional: The three-hour award-winning Bruny Island Cruise is an optional alternative to some of todays walking activities. This is an action-packed wilderness boat trip along the dramatic Bruny Island coastline – featuring towering sea cliffs, seals and occasional sightings of dolphins and migratory whales. It departs daily from Adventure Bay. Please note this activity is at guests own expense. If interested – feel free to discuss with your guides on day one of tour.
We pack up this morning and depart the lodge one final time. Today we journey north – back across The Neck to take in the Cape Queen Elizabeth Track. Featuring pristine beaches and rocky bluffs – this is a very tranquil and relaxing way to wind down from our four-day adventure.
The first section of the trail is flat and heads straight to the coast. We walk past the aptly name Big Lagoon and Little Lagoon where it is common to spot resident water birds. Soon we burst out onto a long stretch of white sandy beach which stretches all the way south across the isthmus. Depending on the tides, we may walk north along the beach or divert inland to climb up and over Mars Bluff. From the ridgetop there are fantastic views back to the Neck and Fluted Cape.
The trail then heads through coastal dunes to Miles Beach. There are some magnificent rock formations in this area – one notable example is a perfectly sculptured dolerite arch right on the beach. Continuing towards the cape itself, we ascend through coastal heath, always keeping a watchful eye out for local birdlife – including the rare forty-spotted pardalote and mutton-bird rookeries.
From the end of the track, we take in wonderful views out across Adventure Bay before returning the same way, and again depending on the tides – may be able to create a circuit back to the bus. From here it’s only a short drive back to the ferry terminal, and an hour further on to Hobart.

DAY 1 – Hanging Rock and Eureka Reef to Castlemaine
Distance: 5kms Grade: 2-3, easy to moderate
Once we depart from Melbourne, we head in a north-westerly direction and arrive in the idyllic village of Mt Macedon where we will pause for a morning tea break. Here you’ll have the chance to savor local baked treats and recharge.
We then proceed to Hanging Rock, where we’ll wind our way up the summit track, offering stunning panoramic vistas. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the discovery center, immersing ourselves in the Hanging Rock Reserve, we have approximately 2 to 3 hours to take in all the reserve has to offer.
Continuing our journey from Hanging Rock, we continue northward to Chewton, commencing our exploration into the area’s rich gold mining legacy. Within this historic setting, we’ll traverse old water race tracks and encounter remnants and ruins from the bustling gold rush era.
These leisurely walks through the dry eucalypt landscape will serve as your introduction to the Goldfields track. As you stroll through what was once a bustling mining village, your experienced guides will pause along the way to showcase relics, share insights, and facilitate discoveries.
Before moving on to Daylesford, take a refreshing swim or unwind by the waterside. Upon arrival in Daylesford, you’ll settle into your accommodation. The evening presents a delectable two-course meal, thoughtfully prepared by your guides, allowing you to savor a well-deserved culinary experience.
Hanging Rock.
DAY 2 – Hepburn to Chocolate Mill, Fryerstown to Spring Gully and Castlemaine
Distance: 10kms Grade: 2, easy
After breakfast and the preparation of lunch we set off to Hepburn Springs Reserve, where an insightful 5km walk awaits us. Setting out along the trail from Hepburn Springs, we journey a segment of the historic Dry Diggings trail, leading us to the chocolate mill—a rendezvous point where our transport awaits.
While we reserve our chocolate indulgence for a later, distinct chocolatier experience, our next destination is Fryerstown. After a drive from the Chocolate Mill, we partake in a walk to Spring Gully. This journey commences with time to explore Fryerstown’s and its historical buildings, including the Burke and Wills Mechanic Institute dating back to 1863. Reconnecting with the Dry Diggings track, we traverse open farmland and the rustic beauty of the box ironbark forest, passing by remnants of gold mining history—gullies, sluices, and mines—before reuniting with our transportation in Spring Gully.
En route back to Castlemaine, we pause at Guildford for insights into the indigenous heritage of the region. Amidst this enlightening stop, we relish a packed lunch while marveling at an ancient River Red Gum that has gracefully stood for nearly 1000 years. This remarkable tree, honored as a tree of State significance on the National Trust Register, symbolises the profound connection between the community and its traditional custodians, the Dja Dja Wurrung Aboriginal people.
Later in the day, our path leads us northward to Castlemaine, where we dedicate time to exploring the vibrant artisan precinct, The Mill. Former Castlemaine Woolen Mills established in 1875, is a rambling complex of brick factories and chimneys now housing artisans, food and wine outlets, vintage treasures, and an exceptional Austrian coffee house. Here we have our anticipated opportunity to taste some local chocolate and coffee while exploring the precinct.
The evening culminates in the comfort of our accommodations, where we enjoy a two course meal prepared by your guides.
Relaxing on the trail.
DAY 3 – Three Lost Children walk, Sawpit Gully to Porcupine Ridge, Mt Franklin and Hepburn Bath house
Distance: 12kms Grade: 2-3, easy to moderate
After preparing breakfast and assembling our lunch, we return to another segment of the Goldfields Track, this time within the Wombat State Forest. Our day’s expedition begins with the Three Lost Children walk, guiding us through historical footprints and tales that continue to resonate to this day.
A short journey from here, we embark from along another stretch of the trail, meandering from Sawpit Gully to Porcupine Ridge. Each of these areas offers an immersive journey through the regional parks surrounding Daylesford, once bustling goldfields ripe for exploration.
After lunch, our course leads us to the dormant volcano of Mt Franklin. This picturesque mountain is shrouded in coniferous forest, adorned with ornamental Silver Birch, White Poplar, Sycamore, and Californian Redwoods. We traverse the 2km circuit trail encircling the volcano’s rim, culminating at a lookout providing panoramic views of the surrounding plains.
Later in the day, our destination is the renowned Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa, inviting us to unwind in the tranquil mineral springs pools. Since 1895, the Bathhouse has offered the timeless pleasure of communal bathing, boasting the Relaxation Pool and Spa Pool—both rejuvenating spaces harnessing the essence of mineral water to replenish and oxygenate, nurturing a profound sense of wellbeing.
Following a period of leisure, we gather for a final group dinner at a local restaurant—a moment to reflect upon our discoveries and engage in meaningful discussions.
DAY 4 – Lake Daylesford, Domino Rail Trail and Trentham Falls
Distance: 9kms Grade: 2-3, easy to moderate
Following breakfast and lunch making, we gather our belongings and checkout of our accommodation. Our final day of walking commences from Daylesford as we head to the Convent Gallery.
Once known as the Holy Cross Convent and the home of a group of Presentation Sisters, the Convent Gallery has evolved since its establishment in 1991. This heritage complex now encompasses various galleries, bars, reception spaces, a museum, lush gardens, a gift shop, and a charming café, we have time this morning to meander at your own pace within this rich space.
From here, our journey carries us homeward, with a pause in the charming town of Lyonville where we begin our 6km walk at the Domino Rail trail. Traverse a Special Protection Zone, delving into the habitat of the endangered Powerful Owl as you trail the former Trentham railway line—a vital conduit in times past, serving as a lifeline for the transportation of provisions, livestock, and timber within the region.
Upon reaching the idyllic village of Trentham, our final destination is the revered Red Beard Bakery, offering a taste of living history. This bakery, with its original wood-fired oven, harks back to a bygone era. The stalwart Scotch oven, employed continuously from 1891 to 1987, boasts a weight of 75 tonnes and the capacity to produce 600 loaves in a single firing. Since 2005, it has been crafting sourdough breads. An observatory window grants patrons a glimpse into the bakery’s bustling operations. For afternoon tea we indulge in a treat from the bakery’s offerings before commencing your journey back to Melbourne, drawing the curtains on your enriching adventure.

ITINERARY
DAY 1 – Crescent Bay and Mount Brown
Distance: 9km, 5hrs walking approx. Grade: 3 – 4 Moderate to More Difficult
We depart Hobart headed for the Tasman Peninsula and the Remarkable Caves where we begin our first walk of the day. Along the way we may stop at Pirates Bay lookout for panoramic views of Pirates Bay and Cape Hauy.
The first part of the hike crosses a series of sand dunes covered in coastal heath vegetation, and you may even spot an echidna. This section offers westerly views back towards Cape Raoul.
The track then opens out into a gaping cavity known as Maingon Blowhole. The track then heads inland onto the lower knolls of Mount Brown where a series of cairns will direct your ascent. The walk up to the summit (optional) is moderately steep, with views over Cape Pillar, Tasman Island, Arthurs Peak and further south to Cape Raoul and Bruny Island.
Once back on the main track we reach Crescent Bay. This beach is incredibly beautiful and often sparsely populated. There is the option to swim here if weather safely permits.
After the day’s walk, we head back to our accommodation to check in, go for a swim if you please and enjoy a well-earned pre-dinner nibbles followed by a fabulous two-course meal prepared by your guides.
After breakfast and lunch making we begin our walk today out to Cape Raoul. Offering some of the most spectacular coastal lookouts in Tasmania, Cape Raoul is an excellent return day walk within the Tasman National Park. With only a few steep sections, the walk is a comfortable walk allowing ample time to relax and enjoy the expansive views of the surrounding Tasman Peninsular and further south to Bruny Island.
To start our journey, we walk through lovely heathland and open woodland with a gradual climb before crossing a bridge above a small gully. The bushland provides spectacular views of incredible cliffs. Cape Raoul is just beyond the lower plateau to the East. To your right is another open section of the cliff top with stunning views to Shipstern Bluff and beyond to Bruny Island and Tasmania’s South coast. From these lookouts we may encounter the intense winds the capes are famous for (among the strongest recorded winds in Australia)
The trail heads east from here along the cliff tops, descending the steepest part of the trail first onto the Cape Raoul plateau. Once on the plateau the landscape changes to stunning coastal banksia scrub and soon we see our first glimpses of the northern coastline including Mt Brown, Arthurs Peak and Mt Fortescue. Situated a little further east, are the impressive 300-metre-high cliffs of Cape Pillar.
After a great day’s walk, we head back to our accommodation for a well-earned pre-dinner nibbles and a hearty meal prepared by your guides.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Awe-inspiring Cape Raoul.
DAY 3 – Fortescue Bay to Cape Hauy (optional visit to Port Arthur)
Distance: 8km, 5hrs walking approx. Grade: 3 – 4 Moderate to More Difficult
After breakfast and lunch-making we depart for the walk to Cape Hauy. This is a well-constructed trail with fantastic views. This walk is spectacular and is graded moderate to hard due to lengthy sections of well-constructed stone steps that ascend and descend nearly the entire length of the trail (you must navigate these heading out to the Cape and on the way back again). The walk starts at a lovely cove. There is a steep climb at the start and end of the walk, but once at the top of the first saddle you will be rewarded with extensive panoramic views stretching far north past the Forester coast to Maria Island and south, detailing the ridges of Cape Pillar. Towards the end the track follows the cliffs edge, providing spectacular views. Extra care needs to be taken when navigating these steep steps on this part of the trail.
The final segment of the trail, before reaching a large plateau, is quite steep and narrow and again care is required to navigate this section. At the end you will have clear views of the exceptional rock formations of the Candlestick and Totem Pole – large columns of dolerite rocking out of the ocean. We then return on the same route. The terrain is quite rocky and there are ups and downs, but it is a magnificent walk.
Before dinner we have some free time. You can simply relax, swim at the beach or our guides can drop you at the Port Arthur Historic Site to visit the interpretation center (self-guided, own expense).
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Walking to Cape Huay.
DAY 4 – Wilderness Cruise & Cape Pillar
After breakfast and lunch making, we head out to join the 3-hour award winning Pennicott Cruise. You’ll get to see Cape Pillar and / or Cape Raoul from the sea – unforgettably dramatic.
The boat passes close by the spectacular rock formations along the coastline and stops regularly for easy viewing and photography. See seals, albatross, white-bellied sea eagles and enjoy an exhilarating ride on this fantastic cruise.
Make sure you dress warmly for the cruise – warm jackets, scarves, beanies and gloves are recommended.
After our cruise we enjoy lunch at one of our hand picked locations; Stewarts Bay, where you can enjoy a swim, the incredible Tessellated Pavement or Pirates Bay. After lunch and reflecting on our 4 day journey we begin our return arriving back in Hobart at approximately 5pm where we drop you back at the Hotel Grand Chancellor.

With just a daypack to carry, you’re free to fully embrace the serenity and spirit of the coast.
This all-inclusive journey is perfect for likeminded travellers seeking connection, renewal, and adventure. Join us and be transformed by the rhythm of the waves, the warmth of the land, and the timeless beauty of Larapuna – Bay of Fires. Read more about this beautiful walk in our blog.
Our journey begins from the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Launceston at 7.30am for a 7:45am departure. On the way to the north-east coast we pass through Lilydale and the Pipers River wine region, before stopping by at the beach side village of Bridport for a short break.
It’s then on to Mt William National Park, and the white sands of Cape Naturaliste – the most northern point of our four-day wander. These first few hours are spent entirely on the beach, pleasantly easing one into their own natural walking pace and rhythm. Along the way, there are often resident sea birds to observe – including Oystercatchers and Hooded Plovers. Your guides will also be able to decipher any bizarre looking ocean life that has been washed ashore with the changing tides. We may discover cuttlebones, urchins, and even shark eggs.
Pausing for an afternoon tea break, we head inland to tackle a one-hour return walk to the summit of wukalina/Mt William. At an elevation of 216 meters, this is the highest point in the surrounding area – providing walkers with a far-reaching panoramic view of the area encompassed on our first two days of walking and beyond. In clear weather, the Furneaux group of islands stand proud as lofty remnants of what remains of an ancient land bridge which once connected Tasmania with mainland Australia. We then return to the bus, before heading back to our accommodation to unpack and settle in.
Iconic beach walking.
DAY 2 – Boulder Point to Deep Creek and Picnic Rocks
After breakfast and lunch making, we head out for our longest day of walking. We return to Boulder Point at the far end of Stumpy’s Bay, and continue south along a lovely stretch of coastline featuring successive small coves protected by rocky headlands. This section is particularly notable for its abundance of large granite boulders covered in bright orange lichen. This famously contrasting palette is a photographer’s paradise, and it’s easy to lose track of time exploring the rock pools and intricacies of such a spectacular landscape.
We soon reach the long sandy stretch of Cod Bay, one of the more remote sections of our walk, before picking up a series of inland tracks which cut across coastal heathland vegetation. These tracks are often ablaze with wildflowers and orchids in early spring. For lunch, we find ourselves a lovely secluded nook – where there may be an opportunity for a swim – before continuing around a hidden lagoon encircled by open marsupial lawns. Here we keep a sharp eye out for Wombats, Black Swans, and Tasmanian Native Hens – an endemic ground dwelling bird species.
On arriving at Deep Creek, depending on water levels, it may be necessary to make a shallow wade across a small outlet to reach our designated afternoon tea stop and the completion of our day’s walking. Again, in good weather – this is a lovely spot for a quick refreshing dip. If energy and time permit, some may choose to continue on along the next stretch of beach for an additional 20 minutes of idyllic beach walking, to the prominent rock formation of Picnic Rocks. Here the bus will meet the group, before returning to our accommodation.
Today’s walk is packed full of highlights. We start our day at larapuna/Eddystone Point – adorned with its beautifully grand lighthouse, built in 1889 from locally quarried granite. This natural promontory is a fascinating site of historic importance to both European and Aboriginal Tasmanians, and we will spend plenty of time exploring some of the wonderful natural and man-made attractions in the area.
Leaving the lighthouse, we break out onto an expansive dune swept beach, often teeming with birdlife. Here we may observe gulls, terns, albatross and gannets – or occasionally migratory species such as short-tailed shearwaters and ruddy turnstones.
The remainder of the day is spent enjoying seemingly endless coves – each being worthy of their own picture-perfect postcard. There are numerous shelly beaches to inspect, and lovely small bays for swimming. This area also boasts some of the more interesting rock formations of the trip, awaiting decipherment from a creative types’ imagination.
After passing across another dune swept beach, we finish our day at Ansons Bay – wading a narrowing in the lagoon to reach our designated afternoon tea spot, and meet back up with the bus.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Lichen rocks and dramatic coastlines make for stunning days.
This morning we get a slightly earlier start before heading out for our final walk. Today’s hike is an interesting mix of changing landscapes within the Bay of Fires Conservation & Recreation Area – this walk is a hidden gem, a local’s secret. Consisting of historic Xanthorrhoea grass trees, sclerophyll forest and an array of wildlife, you will encounter ocean views from a higher vantage point and walk through a dynamic coastal environment set on higher ground above the beach.
Beginning at Moulting Bay, we walk a small stretch of beach around the point towards the Georges Bay inlet, here you will have views of St Helens Oyster farm, Lease 65 and across the bay towards the township of St Helens and St Helens Point Conservation Area.
As we traverse a little higher, we encounter a woodland environment, home to many bird species and providing glimpses of the ocean and coastline through the tall trees. Somewhere along here we will select a suitable shady lunch spot, and maybe take the opportunity for one last refreshing swim.
Passing over a forested hill, it’s not much farther until we reach the end of our loop– This is a beautiful place to finish, before slipping back into the “real-world.” We wave goodbye to the white sand and orange rocks of the Bay of Fires, before returning to Launceston via the lovely sea-side town of St Helens.
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
**Your guides may swap days 3 & 4 depending on weather and group dynamic. If so, it is lovely having a coffee in the township of St Helens with time to explore local artisan and produce stores. It is also a nice way to break up the beach walking days.
*If your guides decide to swap days 3 & 4, you will return to Launceston from Anson’s Bay via Bridport.
*Walking times and distances may be adapted to the weather and groups needs based on guides discretion.

Discover the Tarkine – Takayna Wilderness on an All-inclusive Guided Walking Holiday
“Did this trek last week, it was fantastic! Our guides were inspirational with knowledge of the area, friendliness, and never-ending care and attention to us and others in our group. The food was great quality, all dietary bases covered, plenty of beautiful cheese platters for drinks and nibbles each night. The walks were well planned and manageable, no rush and plenty of time for information and photos. We’d definitely recommend this walk!”– Lo, March 2022.
Step into the ancient heart of Tasmania with our 5-day guided walking holiday through the breathtaking Tarkine – Takayna Wilderness. This immersive short break offers a soul-stirring escape into one of Australia’s most pristine and ecologically rich landscapes.
Traverse approximately 40–45km with just a daypack, exploring Australia’s largest cool temperate rainforest, dramatic coastlines, and sweeping mountain vistas. Highlights include the wild Tarkine Coast, Gondwanan rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and a tranquil cruise along the mouth of the Pieman River. With over 60 rare or endangered species, this region is a haven for nature lovers and conservationists alike.
Led by passionate local guides, each day is tailored to showcase the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Evenings are spent enjoying homestyle hospitality, hearty meals, and fireside comfort in unique accommodation nestled in native bushland.
This all-inclusive journey is perfect for likeminded travellers seeking connection, wellness, and adventure. Join us and experience the transformative power of walking in Takayna, where every step deepens your bond with nature and renews your spirit.
Our trip departs from Launceston, from where it is a 1½ hour drive to the small seaside town of Penguin. Here we stop for a short break, before leaving the busy world as we know it behind. Continuing west, we turn onto a minor highway – pausing for a short riverside walk at Hellyer Gorge. This circuit features many of the rainforest species that we will soon come to be familiar with. It’s then onto the historic tin mining township of Waratah, where we break for lunch above the local waterfall.
From here, our main hike for the day takes in the silent surrounds of Philosopher Falls, a lovely 1½ hour return walk through primeval rainforest close to the headwaters of the Arthur River – the generally accepted northern boundary of the Tarkine region. Here we pass under a canopy of ancient myrtle beech, interspersed with leatherwood, sassafras and ferns, before reaching a viewing platform looking out over the waterfall. This easy walk is a fantastic introduction to the area.
On returning from our hike, it’s only another hour or so before we arrive at the rainforest retreat of Corinna. This old mining town has been lovingly converted into visitor accommodation, and is a gorgeously peaceful spot to spend the next three nights. Located on the banks of the mighty Pieman River – the site features a pub and restaurant, kayak hire, and a variety of shorts walks which you can explore at your own leisure.
Tonight’s dinner is at the Tannin Restaurant (Drinks at guest’s own expense)
Today we undertake two separate walks through impressive temperate rainforest, travelling along the banks of two major tributaries of the Pieman River. After breakfast and lunch making, we walk straight from our cabin doors and immediately onto the trail.
Our first destination is the Savage River, located north of Corinna on the far side of Ahrberg Hill. As our ascent is made, tangled vegetation gives way to a more open understory – revealing large old trees with a gnarled solitary appearance. Here there is a real ethereal atmosphere, particularly after rain – as low cloud tends to hang around the ridgetop.
A long descent brings us to the river bank, where we take a well-earned break and soak up the ambience of this peaceful location. Throughout autumn, this trail in particular is a hotspot for fungi hunting – and anyone into macro photography could easily find themselves lost in their pursuit for many hours. From here we can either retrace our route back to Corinna, or take an adventurous journey up river to explore a little further.
Once back at Corinna we have lunch, followed by another 1½ hour walk to the mouth of the Whyte River. This trail takes us past many close-up examples of Huon Pine – a Tasmanian endemic and one of the longest living trees in the world, some reaching in excess of 2000 years old! This is also a great place to look for platypus, most commonly seen around dusk or dawn.
Finishing our loop, the trail brings us directly back to our cabins. There should be ample time this afternoon for a bit of relaxation before dinner, consisting of nibbles and a fabulous two-course meal prepared by your guides.
This morning we rise a little earlier and take a sunrise boat cruise down the magnificent Pieman River, to reach the wild Tarkine Coast. Smashed by huge surf, and punctuated by rocky headlands – this is a wild stretch of coastline, and a photographer’s paradise.
After being dropped at the Pieman Heads, we walk either north or south, depending on the wind direction. We follow overgrown vehicle tracks to the pounding ocean. Some of the cleanest air in the world has been recorded in the area, travelling along the line of the roaring 40’s uninterrupted all the way from South America. Along the trails, numerous small creeks are crossed, and occasionally it can be a little muddy – but for the most part it is an easy, well graded walk.
Approaching the promontory of Rupert Point, many striking rock features provide clues to a tumultuous geological history. Outcrops allow for grandstand views, where one can make out in the distance the wide expanse of dune country north of the Interview River. The region is also home to a high concentration of indigenous cultural sites, precious historical remnants of an ongoing 40,000-year Aboriginal inhabitation of Tasmania.
The walk south starts in the Pieman Heads shack community before tracing along the beach and then out to Conical Rocks, a striking headland covered with huge granite boulders.
At our turnaround point, we stop for morning tea – and enjoy the sounds and sights of the waves rolling endlessly across the ocean. Beach combing on our return, there may even be an opportunity for a very refreshing swim!
Our journey back up the Pieman River is aboard the historic Arcadia II. This vessel is built from Huon Pine and other local hardwoods, and makes a slow and relaxing punt back to Corinna. In the afternoon, there is plenty of time for short walks, or maybe a self-guided kayak along the river – before an excellent two-course dinner prepared by your guides.

DAY 4 – Mt Donaldson
Distance: 7km, 4hrs walking approx. Grade: 3 – 4, moderate to hard
This morning we check out of our rooms, and pack our bigger bags away in the trailer – before departing on the hike to the summit of Mount Donaldson. This is a steady climb that passes through a variety of changing vegetation types, and one that gives an outstanding appreciation for the vastness of the area.
Beginning in the rainforests surrounding the Savage River, we soon break free of the tree-line. Our efforts are rewarded with breathtaking views far across the Tarkine wilderness and beyond. In fine weather, this is a real highlight of the trip.
Retracing our route, we head back to Corinna for lunch before crossing the infamous Fatman Barge to the southern bank of the Pieman River. Rounding the base of the Meredith Range and the Tarkine’s southern boundary, we pass over the Reece Dam and the Whaleback Lookout on our way to Tullah – an ex-hydro village encircled by craggy mountains. Here we will spend our final night together on the shores of Lake Rosebery.
Tonight’s dinner is at the Tullah Lakeside Lodge Bistro.
After breakfast and lunch making, we jump back in the bus and head off on our final walk to Montezuma Falls. At 104m, these are the highest single drop waterfall in Tasmania, and consequently have become a popular west-coast icon.
Arriving early morning generally sees few other people on the trail – following a gentle gradient, tracing the old path of the North-East Dundas Tramway through stunning forest. Contouring high above the Ring River (a tributary of the Pieman) for almost the entire walk, this is a relaxing way to unwind from our adventure.
The falls themselves are often heard before they are seen – an impressive sight in all conditions, but especially so after heavy rain. For those game, a swing-bridge provides viewers with another angle from which to appreciate this natural wonder.
We then retrace our route back to the bus and begin our return drive to Launceston. Along the way – we pass close by to Cradle Mountain and call in to the charming township of Sheffield to break up our journey. Here we can grab a coffee and take a short stroll through the streets to admire the town’s colourful murals.
